Known as the "Tarpon Capital of the World," some of the most famous fishing waters in the country surround Pine Island and Boca Grande on the southern tip of Gasparilla Island.
A visit to Pine Island Sound and Charlotte Harbor is a trip back in time to when fishing was the largest industry in the area and tiny fishing villages flourished along these scenic waterways.
Today these waters are a fisherman's and nature lover's paradise. Accessible by land from "the fishingest bridge" in the USA, several marinas on Pine Island give you easy access to the estuaries and out-islands. You can enjoy a sightseeing cruise or charter a local fishing guide to assure a successful day on the water. Or, kayak the secluded estuaries for a close-up view of pelican, egret and ibis nesting areas.
Pine Island is also known for featuring some of the most funky, fun shops and galleries in the area. Visitor's can spend hours browsing the store that line the streets of Matlacha and Bokeelia.
Just a short boat ride from Pine Island is Boca Grande, a quaint little fishing village with boutiques, art galleries and cozy restaurants. This charming village offers island and waterside accommodations, unspoiled beaches plus a historic wooden lighthouse museum.
Whether you arrive at these islands by car or by boat, you are sure to be enchanted by the unique and colorful communities of Pine Island and Boca Grande.
